Speech given in the rotunda of the Kentucky State Capitol, Thursday February 23, 2012
Good afternoon! My name is Kathy Polston-Dalton and I am Mrs. Kentucky United States 2012:
It's a privilege to be able to share with you the impact animals have on my life. Its difficult for me to see an animal alone on the side of the road or even outside of a public place and not stop and pick it up and find it a home. My husband and I teach our four children to be kind to animals and to treat them with respect. Children look to their parents for guidance and the way we treat animals and what we teach them will effect their behavior toward animals when they become adults.
I'm an only child, and when I was a little girl animals were my best friends. I am a grown woman and not much has changed. I currently have dogs, cats, and horses. I've had pet goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and even a pet rat. The pet rat seemed to get my husbands attention more than the rest!
I can't imagine my life without animals. When I look in an animals eyes I see peace, strength, friendship, admiration, loyalty and Gods love. On most days I would rather be sitting beside an animal than most people in the world. And, honestly I dont ever see that changing. Some of the best moments in my life have been spent as a child telling my dog my darkest secrets or making big plans with my cats. One of my favorite animals was my Japanese Akita. He died in 2005 and I had inscribed on his monument...".loyal to the last beat of his heart." A part of me died the day he died and I have asked myself so many times...."wouldn't it be wonderful to have a human love you like that?"
I feel that as a society we have an obligation to help those weaker than us, and animals definitely meet that criteria. All of us are here today for one purpose and thats because we love animals and to hopefully persuade our lawmakers to enact laws that protect animal rights and to prevent animals from being tortured and treated cruel by humans. We have an opportunity today and in the future to lend our voices to the millions of helpless animals that can't speak and it is our obligation to never quieten until we have reached every goal we want to obtain.

With Romeo (the most famous dog in Kentucky)! Because of this beautiful animal and the cruelty he endured Romeo's Law was passed which now makes it a Class D Felony in Kentucky to torture a cat or dog. This album is from Humane Lobby Day at the Capitol in Frankfort, Kentucky February 23, 2012

Press Release:

The Mrs. United States Pageant, Headquarters in Fairport, New York, is pleased to announce that Mrs. Kathy Polston-Dalton has been selected as Mrs. Kentucky 2012 and will represent Kentucky in the National competition for the title "Mrs. United States". Kathy lives in Albany, Kentucky and is the wife of Matthew Dalton and the mother of Diego, Braeden, Haven and Jagger Dalton. Since 1986, the pageant annually pays tribute to married women throughout the United States and territories for their strength, beauty, intelligence, and resilience. The Mrs. United States Pageant acknowledges the fact that married women are an inspiration to families, friends, colleagues and communities. In July 2012, Mrs. Kathy Polston-Dalton will join 53 other contestants from across the United States in the city of Las Vegas, where the pageant has been held for the past twenty-five years. The five-day event culminates in two days of competition in which a panel of Judges will score the contestants on beauty, charm, personality, poise, and the ability to articulate. Contestants participate in personal interviews, as well as evening gown and swimsuit competitions. Each state Titleholder is introduced in a State Costume representing a state theme. The winner of the Mrs. United States Pageant will receive many prizes and opportunities for a full year as a role model and spokesperson for married women. The Mrs. United States Pageant has been rated the number one pageant for married women. The most accomplished married women are attracted to the Mrs. United States Pageant, and we are very proud to produce a high-quality, prestigious pageant to honor their achievements.
